Completed ProjectsMeletio's Hot Fish Neon Sign

Watch as volunteer restoration specialist Cal Weldele restores this porcelain neon fish sign.

At first acquisition of this sign, it seemed to be in bad shape.  All of the porcelain looked worn, rusty, and had paint over it, and the metal can, which houses the transformers and holds the two sides of the sign together, was missing.  All we had were the two faces of the sign.

Fish before any restoration

Fish after being polished

In the above images, on the left is the fish when we first received it.  The right image was taken after the sign was cleaned and polished.  It seems that the sign will be a worth while project for our restoration department.

An image of the back side of each face.  In the right image, the back side of the sign is taped off; this is where the can is going to be placed, so all measurements are taken off of this template.

Twenty gauge metal is bent on the metal break at the appropriate place and to the appropriate angle as taken in the measurements.  After all of the metal is bent the two faces of the sign are assembled to assure proper fit.

The can is then painted green, note the intricate cuts that had to be made on the tail to assure the proper bend and fit.  The next step requires our team to create a template for the neon tube bender to follow.

Here the glass housings for the neon is attached to the sign and the wiring is hooked up to the transformer.  Now the two faces of the sign are attached to the can.

In the final step the neon is added and the sign is hung for display at Antique Warehouse.
