Historic St. Charles is a great place to take the family or visit with friends. A truly unique atmosphere with dinning, shopping, entertainment and attractions. A walk down Main Street takes you back to a simpler day. A look back at the history of St Charles finds that it was founded in 1765 by French Canadian fur trader Louis Blanchette (later to be known as St. Charles) as Les Petites Cotes (The Little Hills). Lewis and Clark would later embark on the Missouri River from St. Charles in 1804 to explore the Northwest Territory. St. Charles also served as the first capitol of the new state of Missouri from 1821 to 1826. The 13 block stretch of downtown St. Charles has long been the hub of commercial activity, and since recent renovations and upgrades, is a great place to go for weekend vacationers and "stay-cationers." Whether you are looking for an evening hot spot or a weekend getaway, historic St. Charles has something to offer everyone.
